Today we went to Babies R Us to register. All I have to say is, wow. There is so much stuff in there!! Instead of there being one choice, there are about 20 different options for everything. Very overwhelming. We ended up registering for a lot because it was just easier to scan and delete later (for example, I'm pretty sure that we ended up with 5 different car seats on the list : ) ). Currently, our list online shows that all the items that we registered for in the store are only available in the store which is definitely not the case. I am hoping that this works itself out soon.

Visit #4 Continued
Here are the highlights from our appointment yesterday:
- The ultrasound was wonderful. Matt and I have been feeling worried because my belly is still so small and I have not been gaining much weight, so we were happy to find out that Speck is growing well. Based on all of the measurements he/she actually measured about 6 days ahead of where our dates are. This isn't the most accurate of measures, but it made us feel better. Speck weighs an estimated 10 ounces which according to online is closer to 20 weeks gestation. Let's hope this is not going to be a big baby... And the doctor assured us that I will gain the weight and my stomach will pop out.
- All of the anatomy that the technician was able to see was normal.
- The ultrasound tech checked out the gender parts, but turned the screen, so we did not see. And, there were no accidental sightings by us either. There is no record of gender in our ultrasound report so our doctor cannot accidentally slip up.
- H1N1 vaccine - check.
- Quad screen (screening test for chromosomal/neural tube abnormalities) - pending.
- Everything was fine with me except my hemoglobin dropped a bit so more green leafy veggies and steak for me.
- After doing some insurance research we talked to the office yesterday and our bill was corrected - our insurance pays 100% and we have to pay nothing towards our deductible! We should be in the same situation in March even though we are changing our plan. That was nice news.
- I have more pictures to post soon.

4 down, 3 to go
On Friday, I finished my Maternal-Fetal Medicine rotation which makes 4/7 fourth year rotations behind me! Tomorrow I start ER which means odd hours, but I only have to work about half of the days of the month! Also, tomorrow is the start of Matt's swim team season which we are excited about, but always makes life a little more crazy. Wednesday (as long as I have this day off) is our big OB appontment when we should get some good views of Speck and make sure all body parts are in place! On Thurday, I have my first residency interview. I have a feeling that we are at the beginning of a blurred sprint to the finish line...Hold on tight!

Moving!
I have started to feel "Speck" moving around a bit over the past week. At first I wasn't sure if I was imagining it, but I felt a pretty firm movement on Friday and knew that it could not be anything else. What a strange, but oh so exciting feeling!

Baby Bump (or lack thereof)
We are 17 weeks today! Here are some pictures of the "baby bump." It doesn't really look like much, but the past couple of weeks have been more of a challenge in finding an outfit to wear every morning. This past week our big hurdle has been trying to find professional maternity clothes for my upcoming interviews - it has not been an easy task, but we are getting closer!

To Vaccinate or Not To Vaccinate?
Yes, we will vaccinate our children, no worries!
What I have been thinking about a lot recently is the H1N1 vaccine. I have noticed that since I have been pregnant, I am more hypersensitive to odd smells and tastes. Anything unusual makes me think, "I hope this is not hurting the baby." So, when a vaccine comes out that has been on a fast track to the market, it does cause some pause. To date, there have been no completed trials that involve a pregnant population. Currently, a study of 200 something pregnant women at various gestational ages is underway, but by the time the women who are around my dates have their babies, getting the vaccine will be a moot point. There is a lot that is unknown right now, but here are some things that I do know:
1. 34% of pregnant women with H1N1 are eventually hospitalized for the illness.
2. Less than 1% of the U.S. population is pregnant and 6% of those that have died with the swine flu are pregnant.
3. On our service right now, we have a patient who is 34 weeks pregnant and just was extubated after a week on the ventilator with respiratory failure with confirmed H1N1.
4. I am in three of the most high risk groups - pregnant, young, and a healthcare worker.
5. The swine flu vaccine is manufactured in the same manner with the same background chemicals as the seasonal flu vaccine which has been studied many times and is safe in all trimesters of pregnancy. The only difference is the viral surface proteins that the body mounts an immune response against.
6. Children under the age of 6 months cannot have the vaccine. So my immunity will be passed to baby to protect it.
Although we do not know the whole story, I have decided that the facts that I do know are enough to outweigh the unknowns. So, when the injection version comes out, I will be in line to get the vaccine and hope to have no reason to regret it later!
