"Bye-Bye"
Shannon is on her way to the airport to head to Spain. We know that she will affect many lives and be a blessing to the students in Salamanca. We will miss you bunches, Aunt Si-Si.
Halloween
Carter had a fun Halloween. He wasn't really understanding the trick-or-treating, so we went on a walk to see other kids in the neighborhood. Then, we came back home and passed out candy to the other kids. Well, this was definitely has favorite part! He kept asking for "more" when the kids would leave. The next day, I was required to "sit" on the front porch and wait for the trick-or-treaters with Carter. He was sad that there are not trick-or-treaters everyday!

19 months
Well, I missed the 18 month mark, so here is the 19 month update.
- Carter started at a new daycare at the end of August. We are all loving it! It has been a great fit for him, and we feel like he is learning so much. He moves up to the older toddler room November 7th!
- It is amazing how much he is learning and talking everyday. He has a few two word phrases and is overall good at communicating if you understand his lauguage.
- He calls himself "Tar-ter"
- At night when he is falling asleep he repeats "Dadda, Momma, Riley" (which means Maggie and Riley) over and over in the cutest sing song voice.
- He is quite obsessed with dogs. He will read the books with dogs over and over and over.
- Carter spends a large part of his day reading books - at home and at school. He is getting really good at picking out animals and making their appropriate sounds. We have even received notes from his teachers that he points out pictures before the teacher. My favorite animal sound/motion are the elephant and fish. You should ask next time you see him. : )
- At school, if you pick him up during story time he is sitting practically on the feet of the teacher who is in a chair reading the book. His neck is uncomfortably tilted back and he is 100% focused. He is excited to see us, but then we are required to sit down for the remainder of the story.
- He also loves firetrucks - the song, his shirt, his toys, when they come to visit at school.
- We have had some challenges with "gentle touches" at school, but have made great strides. Fortunately, no biting.
- Carter continues to love being outside. A rainy day is a tough day. Recently, Shannon has taught him the art of chalk drawing which he loves. Also, pretty much everyday we go visit "Cameron" the Jack Russell 2 doors down. Carter and he are buds - they run around together and chase after the ball. They are a cute pair.
- He understands the concept of "two" and likes to pick out pairs of things. Carters "two" is both of his pointer fingers.
- We have been working on colors which he doesn't seem to understand as well. This is probably just developmental, but the thought of color blind has entered our heads.
- He continues to be a daddy's boy, which is sometimes hard for mommy, but she is happy that he has such a wonderful male role model.
- We don't really let him watch TV, but on Saturdays he loves to watch a little "ootball" and has been working on calling the dogs. (See Shannon's video on facebook if you haven't yet.)
- Carter was lucky to spend over a week with Shannon who he has named "Si Si."
We love you Carter!! We are looking forward to being home with family for Thanksgiving!

18 months
Wow...it has been two months since I have posted! Sorry! I am going to be better.

Talking Man
In honor of Carter's 16 month birthday yesterday, I thought that I would make a list of all of the words that he is saying. Of course, they don't sound exactly like this, but these are words that he definitely knows/says consistently. His language comprehension is even beyond the words that he says - we are always amazed at how much he understands. So...here they are:
dog, dadda, momma, bike, hat, hot, belly button, nose, eye, head, shoes, mouth, maggie, riley, blueberry, strawberry, banana, bottle, moo, woof woof, airplane (always accompanied by a point to the sky), ball, duck, choo (which is a train)
That is 24 words that Matt and I could think of!

Visitors
Towards the end of June Grandma and Grandpa came to stay with us. We so love having them here and are counting down the days (about 1095) until we will be close by again. There really is nothing better than family! Carter loves having the extra attention, and he is quite obsessed with his Grandpa. Everywhere Grandpa goes, Carter goes. Here are some moments from their time here.
Memorial Day
Sorry...really going back in time. We were lucky to have a mini vacation and go home for Memorial Day. We celebrated Mandy's graduation and spent time with family and friends. Here are some moments from our trip:
One year down...
In the middle of June, I officially was promoted to second year status. A year of residency has changed me tremendously. While intern year carries the largest learning curve, our second year is actually the most demanding year. So, hold on tight...here we go. Here are some conclusions I have come to after a year of doctoring:
- Our healthcare system is majorly flawed. I won't go in to the details, but there are big problems. I don't know the answer and am glad that I am not in charge of fixing it, but we need some change!
- In general, our patient population are extremely frustrating to deal with. They don't take care of their health, feel quite entitled, and are generally very unappreciative. I know that many doctors can be jerky and feel entitled themselves, but if you every are cared for by a resident, a simple "thank you" goes a long way.
- The general public has no idea what being a resident means. No understanding that I work my butt off 80 hours a week for less than pretty much every other hospital employee to take care of patients who will never even pay the system a penny and who are very unappreciative.
- I have learned to be more assertive especially with the nurses who will walk all over you if you let them.
- Although residency is tough, I have really enjoyed my residency program, the fellow residency, and our hospital system.
- I have learned a tremendous amount and honed my surgical skills, but I still have a long way to go!
- I know all of the secret places to get food!
- Most importantly, I have learned even more what an awesome husband I have. He does so much around the house so that I can enjoy every second with our family that I have. He is always willing to try and come bring Carter to see me at the hospital even if it is only for a hug and then goodbye. I am so lucky to have him and appreciate all of the sacrifice that he has made this year and will continue to make for the next three years.

15 months
Wow...very behind! I am just coming off a working 21 days in a row stretch, so I apologize for my absence.
On June 17 we went to the doctor for Carter's 15 month check up. No problems or issues except that we still need to work on more iron in his diet. Here are his stats:
Weight: 23lbs 12oz (40th%)
Height: 31.25in (55th%)
They didn't write his head circumference down, but said that it is still holding strong around the 90th%.
Here are some things about Carter at 15 months:
- He is talking more. These are the things that he says consistently: DaDa/Daddy, Momma (this can mean me or Maggie), Dog/Doggie, Bird, Book, No, Ball, Belly button, Nose, Hot. He has a whole host of words that he says inconsistently.
- We call him our "tornado" because he can tear apart a room in seconds!
- Carter is so curious about everything and wants to touch and hold everything!
- He throws a pretty good temper tantrum. He knows exactly what he wants and is not happy when he does not get it.
- Books are becoming his favorite thing. He pulls them down from the book shelf and stands next to the couch and reads them over and over again. He can point out animals and objects in a lot of his books when you ask him.
- He can point to his eyes, nose, and mouth. Sometimes he gets ears right, but not always. He also LOVES belly buttons and can get quite obsessed.
- He is definitely at fish! Matt and I scare other parents at the pool because we don't use floaties, floats, etc, we just let him go. This involves standing right next to him and constantly picking him up out of the water and putting him back on the steps. He is not afraid at all to go under. He likes to kick and blow bubbles. At the pool, his greatest desire is to go down the big water slide. However, the pool rules say that you have to be able to go down by yourself, and we are not quite there yet.
- I think he takes after me in that his legs, arms, face are constantly covered with bruises and scratches. Last night at the grocery store the cashier noticed Carter's face of scratches. She was telling us about her daughter who is the same age as Carter who just fell for the first time. The first time?!?!? Carter falls several times daily trying to climb and go to challenging places.
- His smartest accomplishment, in my opinion, is a few weeks ago he figured out how to open the latch to the gate on the back porch. It is the kind that while pushing up on a small level, you have to pull the gate open at the same time. I was super impressed. He feels very accomplished when he does this (which he does way too easily now) because the whole backyard is instantly at his disposal.
- Although I have been working a lot recently, he absolutely knows who I am and is always very excited to see me. This has made my absence much easier on me mentally.
- Luckily, he continues to love his crib. At night, he asks to be put in his crib and will read books over and over in his crib. After nap or in the morning when you go to get him, he actually doesn't even want you to take him out - he just wants you to hand him more books and read with him.
- He continues to be a great eater, but his favorite remains fruit. Although, goldfish might be moving up the rankings some.
- He is such a happy child and a joy to raise!

Hilton Head
Once again, we had a great time in Hilton Head.
Here are some of Carter's favorite things about HH:
- Bike rides: As soon as Matt set down his bike tow, Carter would crawl right in. The entire rides, he just sat back and completely relaxed.
- Beach: Several times he walked right down to the water and plopped down in the last part of the waves. The water felt freezing, but he didn't seem to mind. He loved to take handfulls of sand and squeeze them as hard as he could.
- Pool: The water in the pool was freezing, but once he got used to it, he absolutely loved it. In the pool he liked to jump to me from the steps and side, "blow bubbles" which meant dunk his face in the water, throw his balls, bounce, be tossed in the air. He went under several times with some confused look on his face, but no tears!
- Crab: Carter downed crab legs one night at dinner. As fast and Matt and I could get them to him, he ate them. We told him not to get used to it. : )
- Trying to throw things off the balcony
- Getting rinsed off in the sink
- The foot cleaning shower when you come off the beach
- Swinging at the park
- The metal pelican sculpture sitting on the bench at our resort
- Eating snacks (especially mango) at the pool
- Spending time with Mom and Dad
Least favorite things about Hilton Head:
- Being forced to stop any of the above mentioned items
- Having the runny nose, bad cough, and rash left behind from a nasty virus. Mom and I were coughing and snotting the whole trip, and I was up coughing a lot of the night
- Napping my usual time - who wants to nap when you are at the beach!
- Coming home....
13.5 months going on TWO!
I think that Carter is at a difficult age - he knows what he wants, but does not know how to use words to communicate. Right now, anything that you have he wants. It does not matter if a banana is in front of him, he wants the banana that you are holding. And, watch out, if he does not get what he wants, a temper tantrum ensues. My favorite, and probably most productive way, to end a tantrum is to throw my head back and scream just like him. He looks at me like I have lost it and then starts laughing. I have given him the following theme song from Willy Wonka to this stage of his life which I sing to him frequently:

13 months
There have been so many changes in our little buddy recently. Here are somethings that I hope to always remember:- He is completely OBSESSED with being outside. Pretty much the time that he cries the most everyday is if we bring him in from outside or if he wants to get outside and we won't let him. It does not take much to entertain him outside - he just has to be enjoying the outdoors. His favorites things outside are: picking up Riley's balls and throwing/handing them to him, slides, his bike
- About 1-2 weeks after his birthday he starting walking really well. Starting about a week ago he is 100% walking. This has resulted in some nasty falls with facial wounds (mainly at daycare), but overall he is incredibly stable on his feet. I think this is largely because he was pulling up/cruising for so long before walking.
- You can just feel his vocabulary growing. He says "dog," "dada," "mama," "nana," (banana) and other things that sound appropriate at times. He constantly points at things and wants you to tell him what they are.
- He loves his farm that grandma and grandpa gave him. I am amazed at his focus when he plays with the animals.
- He has developed a sense that objects have a place. It he takes something from a basket, he likes to put it back. His animals live in the silo. This is not to say that he doesn't make huge messes, but you can tell there is some amount of appreciation for order.
- Shortly after his first birthday he moved to the toddler room at daycare. This was a surprisingly easy transition. The requirements for the toddler room include: no bottles at daycare, take a nap on a mat on the floor, less meals/snacks per day, and one nap. He has been doing great! He has been getting better at napping there and has taken some good 2+ hour naps. Even with these naps, however, he is frequently ready for a nap and some quiet time when he gets home from daycare.
- Although he has a long way to go, in my opinion, he is getting more snuggly! : )
- He went through a stretch of not eating as much. We figured out that if we give him larger pieces of the same foods, he will eat them. I guess this is his way of telling us that he is not so much of a baby anymore.
- Riley and Carter are becoming great friends. They like to play ball together. Riley is very gentle and careful with Carter and will take the ball from his hand when he gives it to him. This is a huge change for a dog who would not even get within a 10 foot radius of Carter previously.
- He likes to have his teeth brushed.
- Every night we read a book as a family as Carter drinks his nighttime bottle. Matt and I were getting tired of reading some of the same books, so we have started Harry Potter. : )
- Although still not the biggest fan of the car seat, we have a new trick - books. Carter loves to read his books in the car seat.

11 months
Only one month until Carter is a year old. Wow...how did that happen?!?
Here are some facts about 11 months:
- Carter loves to play with doors - if they are opened, they must be shut. He is very careful about shutting his fingers in the door. I'm sure that at some point he will slam them in the door, but not yet. His favorite door to play with is the door between the kitchen and dining room. He loves to pass the magnets under the door.
- He can stand, but never chooses too. I really thought he would be off and running by this point, but he still has no interest.
- His favorite thing right now is the park - he loves the swing, tunnel, and slide.
- He and his daddy are best buds right now. Makes it hard for Mommy, but as Matt reminds me, it is great that he has a wonderful father who is involved in his life.
- He is feeding himself three meals plus one snack per day. No baby food or feeding this kid!
- During the week when he goes to daycare he takes one short nap (30 min - 1hr) at daycare and then a two hour nap when he gets home and then goes to bed around 8:00. He has way too much fun at daycare to waste anytime sleeping. On the weekends, he still takes two two hour naps and then sleeps 12 hours at night. He has to make up for less sleep during the week.
- He is babbling a lot more and can mimic more sounds. I have suspicion that he is on the verge of (or already has) purposefully called Matt "dada."
- Recently, he learned to clap and is very proud of himself when he claps.
- At the grocery store he loves to push the cart while crawling upright on his knees. I'm sure that we look ridiculous and people probably look at us funny, but he loves it and it wears him out!
- He continues to be more and more independent and knows exactly what he wants and will let you know when he is not happy. I see the beginning of discipline entering!
- He has the cutest (and pretty efficient) backwards crawl.
We are looking forward to Carter's first birthday party next month! Hope to see you guys there!

10 months
Wow...I am really late. It has been a busy, hard month!
I have recently been reading blogs of several people with babies who have developmental/genetic abnormalities. It makes me feel a little guilty about my blog. However, I realized that this blog is a diary and scrapbook of sorts. Not a place to brag, but a place to document the changes in our little man. Everyday I that I fight with Carter on the changing table or am frustrated by him whining when he doesn't get what he wants, I feel thankful that he has the physical and emotional development to do these things. I am blessed with a wonderful child.
On that note, here are some of his 10 month accomplishments:
- He is almost exclusively feeding himself. This, of course, occurred a few days after Matt bought a whole slew of baby food! He loves pretty much anything you give him, but his favorite food is bananas! He likes to stuff as much banana in his mouth at one time and looks like he is playing "chubby bunny." It is amazing how much he eats and how distended his belly gets after a meal!
- Other favorite foods: black beans, avocado (he now loves it!), noodles, bread
- I really thought that he would walk early, but he is quite content to crawl. In reality, this is much easier on us because there is less falling! He has all of the tools to be able to stand on his own and walk, but he can get around faster just crawling. He will stand on his own quite well, but the problem being that to stand means that you have to hold still which is not a priority to Carter!
- He knows how to crawl down stairs. On a few occasions I turned him around and showed him how to get down the stair in our bonus room. A couple of weekends ago when my parents were here he just crawled over, turned around, and made it down perfectly. I'm not sure if they have been working on this at daycare or if it just clicked all of the sudden.
- It amazes me how aware of his surroundings he is. He has always been like this, but he is more and more in tune with the world around him. When we are in public he has to study everything and especially everyone. He love to stare and study people. Good thing this is socially acceptable when you are 10 months old.
- Carter has an ability to figure out cause and effect. I don't know how to explain this, but if you watch him play you can see this.
- He loves the dogs more and more. He and Maggie are good buds. Riley still keeps his distance, but is getting a lot less scared. They are an integral part of every meal time! I think they are really enjoying Carter feeding himself (and them)! Maggie and Riley are a wonderful clean up crew, too!
- We have had some good success at eating out. He enjoys trying new foods and watching all of the people at restaurants. Now he actually takes longer to eat then Matt and I and it keeps him very occupied.
- Because he is getting dirtier from feeding himself, Carter now has a bath every night. He loves this time and has some many fun bath toys to play with. He likes to eat the bubbles and feel the water hitting him from the faucet. When he is ready, he climbs right out! The bath seems so tall, but he pulls himself up and flings his leg right over!
- He has been more snuggly at night after he gets his bottle. He prefers to snuggle with his Daddy which makes me jealous : ), but is super cute!
- He babbles a lot, but his newest game is copying you when you laugh. Really funny!

- He loves the dogs more and more. He and Maggie are good buds. Riley still keeps his distance, but is getting a lot less scared. They are an integral part of every meal time! I think they are really enjoying Carter feeding himself (and them)! Maggie and Riley are a wonderful clean up crew, too!
- We have had some good success at eating out. He enjoys trying new foods and watching all of the people at restaurants. Now he actually takes longer to eat then Matt and I and it keeps him very occupied.
- Because he is getting dirtier from feeding himself, Carter now has a bath every night. He loves this time and has some many fun bath toys to play with. He likes to eat the bubbles and feel the water hitting him from the faucet. When he is ready, he climbs right out! The bath seems so tall, but he pulls himself up and flings his leg right over!
- He has been more snuggly at night after he gets his bottle. He prefers to snuggle with his Daddy which makes me jealous : ), but is super cute!
- He babbles a lot, but his newest game is copying you when you laugh. Really funny!

"Christmas" Break
Although our time was short and there were lots of people that we did not get to see, we were so happy to have a few days at home. My wonderful family waited to have Christmas on December 29. It actually felt like Christmas! Carter enjoyed his first Christmas - especially the boxes, wrapping paper, and ribbons.
