Carter had his 9 month "well baby" visit today which resulted in a diagnosis of ear infections...Here are his stats:
Weight: 19lbs 5oz (30%)
Height: 28.5in (60%)
Head: 46.5cm (85%)
(Anyone find it weird that height in in inches and head circumference in centimeters?)

9 months
Where in the world has the time gone...9 month facts:
- Waves at everyone/everything.
- Not really talking, but says something that sounds like "hi dada" but he has no idea what he is saying. He does babble a lot - especially on the way to daycare in the morning.
- He is so curious about EVERYTHING. You can see his mind processing sites and sounds constantly. While he has plenty of toys, his favorite things currently are the dishwasher, pantry, and trashcan. He gets mad when you don't let him play with/in them.
- He absolutely has likes and dislikes and has learned to fuss when he does not like something. Last night when he was crying because we were changing his diaper I looked and him and firmly said, "NO." He paused, thought about it for a second, and starting laughing. It was hilarious.
- He hates having his diaper or clothes changed. It is a full out wrestling match a lot of the time. And, for some reason, even more when mom is changing his diaper!
- As you can tell from our recent video, he still loves the dogs (especially Maggie) and likes to share food. He figured out this all on his own without our encouragment.
- Carter very easily walks around the house pushing anything that he can. He walks holding your fingers without a problem. I don't think that it will be long until he is off and running.
- We are working on him standing alone - he can do it, but you have to force him to try. Most of the time he cannot hold still long enough to even try. He is very careful. We think this comes from daycare - they can't always be there to catch him, so he very quickly learned to move around carefully. This is not to say that he does not have accidents. This month we have several eye bumps and a big lip.
- He eats pretty much everything you give him. Recently, the only thing that he really does not like is avocado. He liked it when he was younger, but was not a fan of chunks. We are trying to add in more solid food, and, in general, he does well with these.
- He is very fascinated with the Christmas tree.
- Matt and I have determined that he pretty much runs daycare. Everyone there loves him and is impressed with his development. They think he is so cute. I have been lucky enough to be able to drop Carter off at daycare this month. I can barely get in the door before the workers all try and steal a Carter hug.
- He still nurses two times a day, but we are trying to wean to one time a day in the next few weeks because my schedule in January is going to be very crazy.
- At night we have been attempting to read a book every night before we put him to bed. He is horrible at holding still. It ends up that Matt and I read the book to ourselves while Carter plays. I suppose he is still hearing the words. We will keep trying!
- He has a doctor's appointment on Monday so we will have weight/height updates then.

New Skills
Carter has developed a lot of new skills over the past week or so:
- He climbs up the entire set of stairs without much difficulty.
- He always crawls on his hands and knees now - no more army crawl. This transition was fast - over about 2-3 days he made the change.
- His diet is expanding, and we are adding in more soft solid foods. Carter is a great eater - anything you put in front of him he will eat.
- He loves to push around the table and chairs that Grandma and Grandpa bought him.
- Recently, he has been acting like he has some major teeth issues. However, we are not sure what is going on in there because if you try and look you will get bitten!
- Everyday he loves his dogs more and more. He stands at the back door and watches them outside.
- He loves to swing and be outside in general.
- Pretty much we think he is the coolest kid ever!

Family!
We had a great time with family here the weekend after Thanksgiving. Carter even got to meet his Great-Grammy and Great-Papa as well as his Great Uncle Bob and Aunt Carol.

Carter Giggling
Here is a video of Carter laughing. The night before this video we had a great dinner out with the family. Carter found the drink/dinner menu the most hilarious thing ever. We would open the menu and he would just crack up. He stole the hearts of a lot of the other diners and wait staff with his giggles.

Eight Months!
Wow...it is so hard to believe that he is eight months old!!
- He still loves to stand and can get up to standing with little difficulty. He has started cruising around the furniture and loves to walk with help. Sometimes, he thinks that he already can walk. Quickly, he realizes that he is wrong.
- He is a great eater. He gets 4 bottles a day, 3 solid food meals, and a snack. He really loves puffs and crackers. We are going to start and try more small pieces of soft fruits/veggies. I am still nursing/pumping, but have not been able to keep up with him for the past month so we are supplementing with formula. I don't feel as guilty about this as I thought I would.
- Pretty much his favorite thing in the whole world right now is doing the "Hokey Pokey." Nothing really greater in his world.
- He is a supper giggler. He has the most amazing, from the gut giggles. We should try and capture these on video to share.
- Diaper and clothes changing really can be an all out wrestling match. He also thinks that this is hilarious. Sometimes, I have to put him on the floor so that I can use more of my weight to hold him down. It really amazes me how strong he is.
- He has a frog blanket thing that he snuggles with everynight. So cute!
- At day care he has completed his first two art projects. The first is his footprints made into ghosts for Halloween. The second is finger paint. You better believe that they are on the fridge!
- We were a little slow to move on getting crib guards, so our crib has some lovely teeth marks. At least we bought the cheapest crib!
- He has thinned out a lot. He still has some chub, but definitely not as much. He pretty much does not hold still unless he is sleeping, so I'm sure that he burns record number of calories. Matt and I are still amazed when we see babies of all ages holding still. Carter pretty much never held still. Not in the womb. In his early weeks, yes. But, even early on you had to be moving while holding him, and he did not stand for not being held out to see the world. We see babies in the carriers out and about and laugh thinking about if we tried that with Carter. We are predicting a climber. Mom said that I never tried to climb and get as high as he already does, so must be a Matt trait.
- Above are bath time pictures to really embarrass him when he is older. Can you say yearbook and rehearsal dinner slideshow?!?! Doesn't he have such a cute little tush?
A Lucky Day
Good morning. Yes, it is 5:30am. No, I do not have to work today. Yes, I have already started laundry. Yes, I am my father's child. Such is the life of being on a schedule of getting up at 4:30 in the morning.
I wanted to share with you my lucky Tuesday. On Tuesday, I had clinic so I did not have to be at the hospital until around 6:30 so there were actually people on the road when I was driving to work. I was going a wee bit too fast and got pulled over. As soon as I saw the cop, I knew that he was going to pull me over. Our conversation went something like this:
Cop: I got you driving a little fast this morning, ma'am. Are you late for work?
Me: Yes, I'm sorry sir. Um....exactly how fast did you get me going?
Cop: Well, let me just put it this way... (long pause, gulp) I'm going to get you information and if everything checks out I'm just going to give you a warning.
Wow....this was lucky! I later learned that in NC if you are going 15 over the speed limit you automatically lose your license for a month. Let's just say this was lucky event number one of the day.
Later that night Matt, Carter, and I were heading out to get haircuts at our local Great Clips. When I walked in the garage I heard this "shhhhhhhh" noise. It seemed to be coming from my car. In Matt's optimistic-nothing is ever wrong-perspective he states, "I think it is the leaves blowing the wind outside." I tried to convince myself of this but then noticed a huge nail in my tire where the noise was originating from. A quick trip to Firestone and tire fixed. What a mess it would have been if I did not realize this and had a flat tire at 5:00am.
So, some people may look at these events as bad luck, but Tuesday I really felt like someone was looking out for me.

Ear Infections x 4
I have the best husband. He spend his Saturday first taking Carter to the pediatrician - diagnosis: double ear infections. Then, Maggie to the vet - diagnosis: double ear infections. Despite the ear infections, Carter and Maggie are feeling just fine! Carter has had a bit of a cold which seemed to be getting a bit worse. The only reason that we decided to take him to the doctor was because he started to have gunk from one of his eyes. We both thought that we were dealing with pink eye, but, surprise, ear infections. We were amazed because he really has not been acting that sick at all. The doctor said that one side was really bad and she was surprised that he had slept the night before. Well, the night before he slept 13 hours. We are lucky to have such a great son!!

Surgery is Over!
Things I learned on my surgery rotation:
- I am soooooo glad that I am not a general surgery resident
- Places to sneak away and take a nap
- Where all of the surgeon lounges are with free food
- Surgeons really can be as intense, malignant, egotistical as people make them out to be
- Eight 24 hour ++ calls in one month are WAY too many
- I have the best husband to sacrifice as much as he had to the past month
- Did I mention that I am glad I am not going into surgery?!?!
Thank goodness that is over! Now, back to the OB world tomorrow morning. 1/3 of the year is over!
