Doctors Visit #3

This month I am doing a rotation on Maternal Fetal Medicine. We take care of all patients who's pregnancy does not go 100% according to the books. Before I started, I thought that the month would make me paranoid (more than I already was), however, after three days of the rotation, I don't feel worried - I feel thankful. Who knows what adventures could come in the next 26 weeks, but I am thankful that I started this pregnancy healthy and that everything has gone well thus far.

On that note...today I went to the doctor and everything was great. I'm not sure if he says this to everyone or not, but my doctor said that the baby "has a really healthy sounding heartbeat - really strong." Either way, it made me feel good! The heart rate was in the 150s today and what a wonderfully beautiful sound it is to hear your baby's heartbeat and know that they are still alive! Our next appointment is in 4 weeks when we have our anatomy scan and quad screen which screens for chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects.

Also, I had the pleasant opportunity to meet with the financial lady today. You too for six low payments of $168 can pay your doctor for a delivery! Yes, we have insurance. No, this does not include the hospital fees. I guess it is true that these kiddos aren't cheap!

Was it planned?

When one of my close friends told me that she was pregnant, "Was it planned?" was most definitely one of the first questions that I asked. And, now that we have been announcing our pregnancy for some weeks, I have found that this question is overwhelmingly one of the most asked. At first, I did not mind it, but as I am asked it more and more, I am frustrated with the question. I know that our situation is different than many others, but, really, what does it matter if it was planned or not - we are still having a baby and we are still excited about it! It seems so judgmental and, truthfully, is a very personal question.

So, to answer the question for what I know will not be the last time - YES! It was planned. We feel very fortunate that our plan came to fruition. And to explain our rationale - I am done with rotations at the end of Feburary and "Speck" (Matt's nickname for the baby) is due at the end of March. I have March, April, May, and June off and start residency in July. When we started to think about this gift of time, we realized that never again will I have this amount of time to spend at home with a baby.

To my friend who I asked "was is planned" - I apologize. : )

We are pregnant!

Yes, we are expecting a little baby. I am 14 weeks pregnant today and baby Marsico is due March 27. We are very excited!

So...welcome to our blog which we will attempt to keep. When I was younger, I would decide that I was going to be dedicated to a diary or journal, and I'm pretty sure that it never lasted even a week. So, we shall see how this goes!
