teeth update

Carter's bottom two teeth are almost all the way in.

I forgot to say something neat about his teeth. His teeth came in two days before my first tooth!

Lake Norman Tri

Matt did really wonderful in his Tri yesterday. He had a fever Wednesday - Friday morning so we were not sure if he would be able to participate. Of course, he rallied and ended up finishing six minutes than his goal time! Carter and I had a great time as his cheering section.

5 months!

Our little buddy is 5 months old!

- He LOVES the dogs - especially Maggie because she interacts with him the most. I am pretty sure that when he starts crawling it will be because of the dogs. I think Maggie gets more smiles than anyone in our house.
- He seems like he would like to start crawling, but just doesn't really know what to do, so he lays on his stomach and frantically moves his arms and legs. He can make some forward progress and rolls all over the place.
- He has discovered drinking out of the water glass, and it makes him so happy. He has improved greatly - he actually swallows some water now. He probably is ready to start cereal, but we are holding off for a little longer.
- Carter makes a lot more sounds now. It seems like he is trying to tell us something, but, unfortunately, we don't speak his language. Additionally, he makes these really high pitched noises which Matt has appropriately labeled his "bird noises."
- After one whole day of daycare last Thursday, Carter had his first high fever on Sunday. He generously shared his germs with us, and we have all been sick this past week. Fortunately, Carter's illness seemed to be the shortest and most self-limited - go figure!
- Everything goes straight to his mouth right now.
- He is starting to interact and smile for the camera more, so we have some great pictures like the one above.
- He found his toes, however, they are not very exciting to him because he cannot get them to his mouth.
- Carter can sit up on his own for up to about 10 seconds.
- I asked Matt, "anything else?" He replied, "nothing else that I can think of besides the general cuteness."

More Visitors!

Last weekend we were lucky enough to have Mom and Dad come for a visit. We had a jam packed weekend of fun! We spend some time at the pool, went to a bike race downtown, ate some yummy meals, took some walks, and adored Carter. Here are some pictures from our great weekend.

Also, Carter had his first day of daycare yesterday. He did great and had a wonderful time. And, the best part, mommy and daddy survived too!

Teeth

Believe it or not, Carter has two teeth! We first felt them on Friday and now they have fully broken through the skin and are making their grand appearance!

Shannon and Kathryn Visit!

This weekend we had the wonderful opportunity to spend the weekend with Shannon and Kathryn. We spent some time at the pool, enjoyed some yummy food, spent time catching up, spoiled Carter, and took some great shots. Thanks Kathryn for the pictures!!!

First Month Down

One month down...47 to go!

So, I made it through the first month. While there were definitely many hard moments and some tears, it was not as bad as it could have been. While I worked almost 90 hours one week, most of my other weeks were between 65-75 hours. The learning curve this month was not so much a curve, but a straight line towards the sky. I had many interesting moments and learning opportunities. Some highlights:

- I delivered 22 babies.
- About 50% of the patient population that we serve are Spanish speaking. I when I say Spanish speaking, I mean absolutely no English. Needless to say, I have been speaking lots of espanol. My espanol needs A LOT of work. With the help of Kathryn, Juanma, and Shannon, I learned how to say some important obstetrical spanish phrases.
- I have had several handcuffed patients with armed police officers.
- Staying up all night is not bad the first night, but the second night is MUCH harder!

Next month, I am doing an outpatient internal medicine rotation and will work office hours without weekends!!!
