Our House

I will start to give you a tour of our new house!

Here is Carter's room!

He did it!

FINALLY - yesterday Carter rolled over (on a 100% flat surface)!! He has been so close and finally made it over and got his arm out of the way yesterday.

In other news, I have survived my first seven days of orientation and have today and tomorrow off!! My first "doctor" shift is Thursday night from about 5:30pm - 7:00am. I am hoping to deliver some babies!! Matt and Carter have established a good routine. Matt is enjoying his time home with Carter. When I get home, he normally leaves to do some triathlon training. Tomorrow Carter and Matt are going to sign up for the YMCA where he can get 2 hours of babysitting a day (for $1) while Matt works out. I think this will be great for Matt!

My Daddy is the Best!

Happy First Father's Day to Matt! I am sure that you all know what an amazing father Matt is. I am thrilled that our son will grow up with him as an example. Also, happy Father's Day to my Daddy too!!

Matt is wonderful at sending me pictures during the day - this is Matt and Carter swinging today while I was at work. How cute are they!!

And it begins!

Today was my first day of residency. From now until July 1st we have a lot of (boring) training, orientation, and skills labs/checks. Here are things that I am very thankful for:

- I really like the five girls in my class!
- One of my fellow interns has a six month old baby who she is still breastfeeding, so I have a pump buddy! We are very thankful to have each other. Today they had a special room set aside for us with a "Do Not Enter" sign on the door and bottles of water and a nearby fridge/freezer. It was so wonderful to see how accepting and accommodating people are to breastfeeding mothers. I know that it still will not always be this easy, but today made me feel so much more hopeful.
- We received our call schedule yesterday and it really seemed too good to be true. Last night our program director gave us an explanation. The ACGME (the governing body of residents and programs) have been seriously discussing reducing the max work day from 30 hours to 16 hours. This was a HUGE topic of discussion during the interview season. Our program director thinks that it is very likely that this will be implemented in 2011, so he wanted to go ahead and try a new schedule out with our class! I mean, seriously, I could not even believe it - I was doing a happy dance around the house! So, instead of overnight call, there is a night person who comes in from 5:30pm - 7:30am. It will be hard to adjust to the day/night switch, but how much better is this! And, I have July 2-5 off - REALLY?! Am I dreaming?!? I counted our hours and it will average to about 70 hour weeks - still crazy, but much better than 80! So, my hope is that he does not find a glitch with the system and change back to the every 4-5th night call schedule. It is wonderful to have a program director that is so resident friendly. As Matt said, "We knew that you picked this place for a reason."

We are settling into Charlotte nicely. Here are things that we love about the city so far:
- Traffic - it is amazing! We can get from our house to downtown at 5-6pm in 20 minutes with hardly any traffic
- Restaurants - YUMMY! We have had some great meals. Nothing even close to Disgusta.
- Our neighborhood pool - I have had so many flashbacks to summers spent all day at the pool. In case you don't know - I LOVE THE POOL! I am so excited already for next summer when we can teach Carter to swim.
- Bike rides - Matt has found a couple of good groups to ride with.
- Whitewater Center - Matt has a year round pass and checked out the mountain biking trails with Dad. My class is going on Thursday to do the ropes course.
- Our neighborhood - nice neighbors, walking trail, volleyball, tennis courts, and, did I mention?, A HUGE POOL!!!!

Pictures of the house to come.

Three Months!

I am a few days late, but here are some things about three month old Carter:

- He has pretty much 100% head control - only when he is sleepy and lazy does he need a little help.
- When he lays on his tummy he can lift his head and shoulders 90 degrees off of the ground. He, however, does not enjoy tummy time, so we don't really force the issue.
- The pool - he is still neutral about the pool. I think that he likes the water, but he isn't quite so sure about the colder temperature.
- Still waiting on the roll over from the flat surface. He is very close. At this point, I don't think that he has much motivation to roll over even though I think the skills are there.
- He is OBSESSED with the fans. He does not need toys or human entertainment for a lot of the day if there is a fan for him to stare at. He prefers them to be on, but they are still apparently very interesting even when they are not moving.
- At night, he does a great job of self-soothing. He sleeps from about 8:30-7:00 with one feeding between 2-4ish. For a breastfed baby, I am very happy with this!
- You can tell that he is starting to practice sitting. He likes to lay on your legs and stomach and pull up to a sitting position. He is very wobbly from side to side, but strong enough to pull himself forward.
- His hands spend more time open rather than in fists, and he grabs things with less coaxing from us.
- This one to embarrass him as a teenager (or maybe he will be proud) - he is quite gassy and it has started to smell bad!
- He is quite chunky and wears his extra weight in his legs and cheeks. His legs have some serious fat rolls!
- Noise and large amounts of people have started to overwhelm him. He doesn't do very well in these situations right now and especially if they are between the hours of 5-8 which means that we are not eating dinner out right now. Our last dinner out with Mom and Dad was not a success, so I decided that we would try eating lunch out in the future. : )

That is all that I have for now!
